Hero's of Newerth is a new science fiction fantasy game that throws together parts of RTS (Real Time Strategy) FPS (First Person Shooter). I hear this is the first time a game has been labeled Real Time Strategy Shooter or RTSS.
The setting is in the distant future and after world destruction the remnant civilization start to rebuild society. However they are fighting with ogres that are rather uber intelligent.
It is an online game only and therefore you can’t play by yourself. Like most of these types of games it is played on a map, and you join up with two or more teams which can be the ogres/beasts and humans to play a match and fight it out. Which ever team you are on you need to destroy the PES (Primary Enemy Structure) or commonly called the “Stronghold” for the humans and the “Lair” for the beast/ogre race,
Each side or team has a commander, who leads the game like an RTS, and the other players, who are FPS.
The commander’s duty is to develop the technology tree and this is done by erecting buildings and also researching technology. The commander can also create ten workers.
The players may select from 10 different units with the aim of destroying the enemy base.
All the rest of the 1 to 127 players on a team are field players. They play the game as a First Person Shooter. They receive their orders directly from the commander, and these show up as visual waypoints like being ordered to attack the enemy, mine resources, or erect buildings.
When a field players are killed, they can then purchase greater powerful units and armory before they spawn.
The units and armory or weapons are decided by the commander's development of his technology tree.
Savage got an 8 out of 10 award from Eurogamer but said it they could have had more guide books or tutorials however praised the Real Time Strategy features, with a huge selection of player styles and out of this world graphics.
